Qualifying for the Nationals

Ages 9, 10, 13(80), 17, and 18/19U are considered to be "open". This means your coaches and athletes must be registered members of AAU and MUST play in the District Tournament to be eligible to participate in the AAU Nationals.

Ages 11, 12, 13(90), 14, 15, and 16U. These age groups must qualify for the nationals. This can be done by three (3) methods.

  1. District Tournament-Bids will be awarded depending on the number of participants.
  2. Regional Qualifiers-These "Super Regionals" will award bids to the nationals. The number of bids will be dependant on the number of teams participating.
  3. Previous years finish in the Nationals. This bid is awarded to the top finishers of the previous years nationals.

The regional qualifiers and previous years finish will/can award your team a bid to the national championship. However, your team MUST participate in the district championship to validate that bid.

The number of participating teams in the district championship will determine the number of district bids to the nationals.

If your team has already qualified via a super regional or previous years finish, your bid will be validated and is not dependant on your order of finish. If your team has not previously qualified, your bid will be dependant on your order of finish in the district qualifier (state tournament).
